Representasi Karakter Masyarakat Jawa Timur dalam Film Yowis Ben

The characterization of Javanese people in films in the country is a form of reality that is built and constructed by the public in the entertainment world. Starting from this background, the writer examines how the media of a film shows characterizations and characters that are often raised in films. This study uses a qualitative approach with a constructivist paradigm and uses Pierce's semiotic analysis method. The purpose of this study is to look at the portrayal of the character of the Javanese community, especially the people of East Java that appear in the film and see how icons, symbols and messages through Pierce's semiotics. Through analysis of text and images, it can be concluded that the depiction of the characters of the East Java community is constructed through their scenes, roles and languages. The East Javanese character is simple, accepts what is, is innocent and looks very medhok with their language accent. From the character, it even creates stereotypes that arise, among others, seeing the people of East Java as representatives of the inferior, helpless, poor and always a central character that is oppressed. From the analysis of this film we can find out that in the world of film industry the film industry especially regional films are still very thick with ethnocentric and stereotyped.
